Meet the Nijland family: farmer Herbert, his wife Yvonne with their 2 daughters en 2 sons. On the almost 100 year old estate the family makes artisanal specialty cheeses, according to authentic preparation methods. To guarantee the highest quality, the whole production process is on the family farm. The family is ready day and night to take care of the cattle, to work on the land and produce the various cheeses. Everything with the greatest care.
Estate Kaamps, the estate where the Familie Nijland cheeses are made, has been in the family for years. Farmer Hendrik took the farm over in 1920 and married with Mieke Kamphuis. Until 1963, when the mother of Herbert inherited the farm from her aunt Mieke, who in her turn handed it over to Herbert and his wife Yvonne. In 1985 the dairy farm was extended with the cheese making factory and Estate Kaamps. Up to this present day, Herbert and Yvonne run the estate, together with their 2 sons and 2 daughters.
Besides an excellent cheese with ditto taste, the family ensures the most sustainable cheese production possible. We strive for climate neutral cheese and work every day to do better than yesterday. For example, the roofs of the farm and cheese factory are covered with solar panels. As a result, we use solar energy on the farm, but especially in the cheese factory instead of fossil fuels. In addition, we farm as farming was originally intended. Our land consist of 75% grass and includes extra clovers. With this we reduce fertilizers and retain extra CO2, which is better for the cows, nature and results in a creamier milk and cheese.
Animal welfare is very important to the Nijland family. The cows enjoy massage brushes, cow matrasses and a well-balanced diet. The cows choose by theirselves if they want to be outside on the green pastures or in the spacious and clean stables.
All Familie Nijland cheeses are handmade, and according to well-preserved family recipe. Every cheese is unique and has an excellent taste.
The family stribes to an estate as sustainable as possible. They produce with the best interest for animals, environment and people. They also ensure as few fertilizers as possible, by sowing additional clovers in the grass.
All cheeses are made of meadow milk and wear the quality ‘meadow milk’ mark. The cows are milked by an voluntary milking system. This means the cows decide by themselves when they want to be milked.
Familie Nijland stands for unique cheese specialties that stimulate the senses. Made with the best milk directly from the cow, for an incredible creamy cheese.
